When I see a patient with a dislodged veneer I try and gently place it back on its tooth and see if it fits. If it does, I clean it, and gently sandblast the inside part. If the internal porcelain is exposed I re-etch the surface with hydroflouric acid and the rebond the veneer. This can often be done even with a broken veneer as long as the two pieces are well approximated. Repairs done in this way can often function well for years, assuming that a patients occlusion does not over stress the veneer.
Often I recommend my patients with porcelain veneers wear a protective night guard at night to prevent harmful bruxing forces from dislodging or breaking them. Veneers do not hold up as well if patients often function with force applied to the incisal edges of the veneered teeth since this applies a "bowing" pressure to the veneer and can result in dislodged or broken veneers.
That's a really good question, and I'm glad there's a really good answer. My cousin has veneers, and one of them came off last week. We found this, and it was a big help with saving the veneer, and his tooth. Thiago | http://www.dentistryoffayetteville.com/porcelain-veneers-fayetteville-nc.html
ReplyDeleteThanks for the answer. Now I know what to do if one of my veneers falls off! I just got some a couple of months ago and have been worried about that happening. Also, where can I find a good night guard? Would it be o.k. to just wear a football mouthpiece or are there specialized kinds for veneers? Thanks!

ReplyDeleteThanks for sharing all this information. I just got some veneers on my front teeth. They were a significant expenditure, so I want to protect them. As soon as I post this, I am heading to the store for a mouth guard.

I think my sister has veneers on her teeth. She got them when I was much younger so I can't be completely certain. I do remember her teeth looking one way and then it being different a few days later. I just never thought to ask because I was only eight.

My parents both have veneers. They looked great until one fell off just like this article says. I don't know what she did, but I assumed she went to the dentist. I think it's a good idea to get veneers. I know it would give me a lot more confidence. http://www.patrickpittsdentistry.com/our-practice

Can I use Fixodent in the meantime if the veneer fell off in a whole piece on the front tooth?
ReplyDeleteThe problem with putting it back is it may get chipped or broken because it is extemely fragile when not bonded in. Recementing a broken veneer is more difficult and may result in an unesthetic outcome. Try to see your dentist ASAP instead of using Fixodent.
