It probably depends on the states licensing laws and with whom they take their training with. In New York State dentists are required to maintain their certification. Some training programs offer a one year valid cpr certification, but most of my colleagues are trained by certified trainer who is allowed to offer a two year certificate.
Tomorrow a trainer, Michael Bloomberg is coming to our office and training me and my hygienist in CPR. I always benefit from these refresher courses and the protocols for handling emergencies seem to change frequently. One consistent protocol has been that in event of an emergency a 911 call should be placed as soon as possible. Even though I hope that I will never have to use the skills taught, practice makes perfect, and dentists need to be prepared to handle an emergency, at least until an EMT arrives at their office.
