My old battery operated light was showing its age and only working intermittently, so I decided to treat myself to a new enhanced version. This model is called the Orascoptic Discovery and it allows the light to be adjusted for three different illuminations, bright, brighter and "crazy bright". Most often I use it on the lowest setting, but the high setting is especially good for dental examinations. Often its hard peering interproximally between teeth. This area of the mouth tends to be in a perpetual shadow. Overhead operatory lights do a poor job in allowing visualization of the proximal portions of posterior teeth.
Although there are an awful lot of very exciting and expensive new technologies available to dentists, sometimes even a simple purchase can improve our capabilities. With my new light, I can visualize inter proximal caries more easily. To an outside observer, this light may not seem that much more impressive than my old one, but it clearly is an improvement. I look forward to" brighter times" in dentistry.
