Should I make video for my dental website?

This is an article intended for my colleagues, since video can be a terrific way to impart ideas to other dentists and our  patients. Watching a clinical video by a leading clinician is a great way to improve ones understanding of how to better perform a dental procedure. If a picture is worth a thousand words, than video is potentially even more valuable. That being said, most dentists, myself included, are not natural onscreen performers.

Many dentists have contemplated making a video to promote their practices and this is an area in which I have some first hand experience. The first videos I made were for About.com on various dental topics. A videographer came to my office and essentially shined a bright light in my face and instructed me to "speak". It was not  surprising that when I viewed the first video I resembled a frightened deer frozen by a headlight.

At this point, I have been in about ten videos and I appear more relaxed. For me, the secret is to know before hand what sort of message I would like to send and to focus on it, and not "the camera", when I am speaking. Also not every word  I say needs to be preserved for eternity. Editing is essential to producing a good video product.  My friend Steve Cooney made the video posted below and I am happy with the result.

A good video can be extremely helpful in marketing a dental practice. It really can give potential patients a feeling for what a dentist and a practice is like. Also, videos featuring procedures can be valuable for patient education and can lessen a patients anxiety about a procedure.

Even if a dentist is not a natural onscreen presence a good video can be made that features the more camera ready aspects of their practice. If their office and staff are appealing , that can be emphasized in a video and the dentist should have less onscreen time. Clearly a well produced video can be a powerful endorsement for a dental practice and is definitely worthwhile.
