I instantly imagined a lingering illness that would leave me without my trusted assistant for an extended period. My office manager, who usually fills in when my assistant is out, had her right hand in a splint (due to a trigger finger) and would probably not be able to help much as a chair-side assistant..
Slightly later, while on my commuter train, I got a call from my office manager, who explained that there was an air leak in the middle room. I suggested that she try and hunt down our building's super, since I had a 9 o'clock patient. As it happened, my super was off premises but I was able to fix the air leak myself before seeing my first patient.
All patients were seen and their dental problems addressed, but their treatments took longer than usual. As I write this it's Tuesday morning, I am having my second cup of coffee and feeling a slight euphoric buzz from the caffeine. After all, Mondays are usually the most difficult day of the week and, prudently, I have arranged for a temporary assistant to come help me!
